Archbishop’s request for

A Review of Pastoral Areas

The Archbishop is considering the future of the church in the light of falling numbers of clergy and laity.

Malcolm McMahon says,

“I am asking you, clergy and people together, to look carefully at your Pastoral Area and see how we can best serve the mission of the church in your part of the Diocese. I would be grateful if you could share with me your ideas of how we can go forward with fewer priests and perhaps fewer building too….. I have asked your Dean” (which for Our Lady of Compassion is Msgr John Furnivall) “to call clergy and people together to help me in the forward planning we need to embark upon.”

It is hoped that there will be an open meeting for parishioners (around end April early May) to discuss this further.

Finally, on 19th May there will be a follow-up meeting for Clergy and parish reps to analyse all the feedback and collate it for submission to the bishop.
